For the G&T lover in your life
Grab the Four Pillars Christmas Gin. It’s the result of adding the family pudding recipe to a still, and tastes like Christmas in a bottle. This lively spirit was made one Victorian Derby Day when Four Pillars’ Cam added his mum’s Christmas pudding to the still. He also added a good lick of Rutherglen Muscat for that true pudding taste.
Delicious.
For the visiting Whisky enthusiast
Starward Two Fold won the Best Australian Blended Whisky at World Whiskies Awards 2019. Australian malted barley and wheat are used to make this drop, aged in Melbourne and known around the world.
Send your visiting rellos home with a bottle of this to enjoy in colder climates while remembering the Australian summer.
For Nana
Reach for the St Agnes Brandy. If you can bear to pass it on.
This particular brandy has aged well - just like Nana herself. It’s rich and smooth, having sat in it's barrels for 15 years. It’s an Australian drop, so also works for out of town visitors.
Give it away or keep it for yourself. Shhh we won’t tell.
For the easily bored white wine lover
Jim Barry Assyrtiko keeps boredom at bay. It’s the only Australian Assyrtiko that you’ll find. It’s a crisp white, native to Santorini.
In the winemaker, Peter Barry’s, words:
“I first tasted Assyrtiko in August 2006 while on holiday with my wife Sue on the Greek island of Santorini, birthplace of the Assyrtiko grape variety. The crisp, acidic qualities reminded me of our Clare Valley Rieslings and yet it was a flavour I had not experienced before. Intrigued with this newfound variety, I began the process of importing cuttings into Australia through quarantine. In August 2012 we planted Australia’s first Assyrtiko at our Lodge Hill Vineyard, a special and unique site treasured by my family and suited to this variety. Our Assyrtiko journey has been fascinating and has enabled us to produce a wine which, I believe, is a true expression of the variety. I hope you find the flavours as interesting as I did in 2006.”
For family lunch
For a family event, go for a family wine with the Tuesner Wark Family Shiraz. Every year, the Tuesner team take a few more grapes from the Wark family vineyard. This wine is made wholly from those grapes. It’s a dark wine, with the flavour of plums, dark fruits, warm spices and ripe tannins.
It might just be the perfect Barossa Shiraz, and it will certainly please anyone who receives it this Christmas.
For the whisky snob
We don’t believe in snobby drinking, but there is one in every family and they always come out at Christmas.
That said, any whisky lover will be a fan of this Macallan 12 year aged in Sherry Oak casks, brand new to the Australian market.
Sherry casks will infuse any whisky with warm, spicey and vanilla-filled flavours. The oak gives clove and fruit flavours. All in all, they’re the flavours of the festive season.
For the unique craft beer lover
If you can get your hands on it (which isn’t easy) look for any of the Wildflower blends. Wildflower is a Sydney-based blendery (not brewery). They focus on fermenting beers with a mixed house culture of brewers yeast mixed with wild yeast and bacteria foraged from New South Wales.
Our real favourite is the Waratah, which we hope is on the way back to shelves in 2019. It’s full of locally sourced botanicals.
For the adventurous type
While this won’t seem that adventurous for our Japnese readers, Umeshu isn’t as well known to Australian drinkers.
Umeshu is a plum wine, and with plum pudding being a Christmas staple we’re taking the leap to call this our new Christmas favourite.
This particular Umeshu comes from Choya, the world’s most famous Umeshu distiller. It’s a blend of the Ume fruit (from which Umeshu gets its name), with brown sugar, black rum and black vinegar. Drink it on the rocks alongside dessert.
For the dessie driver
Seedlip Spice is a distilled non-alcoholic spirit. It’s been specifically created as a suitable gin replacement for your G&T.
It’s made with botanicals like gin, but you can still drive home afterwards. This particular mix is heavy on clove flavours, and also features allspice, grapefruit, lemon peel, cardamom, American oak and cascarilla bark.
