Our Bordeaux buying guide

Did you know that we import French wine directly from the producers?

Our newest selection comes from the Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux. It's a great introduction to the world of Bordeaux wines.

A little bit more about Bordeaux

The recent vintages from Bordeaux have been excellent. Bordeaux vignerons have been developing innovative techniques, which have seen the quality of the wine lift.

These aren't wines that need to sit in a dusty cellar for 30 years. Although if you do want to sit on them they'll certainly improve!

We have selected these directly from the 'petit Chateaux' - making this some of the best value Bordeaux wine you'll find.

Our picks for the season

Chateau L’Heyrisson Merlot-Cabernet Bordeaux

Chateau L'Heyrisson is located close to Bordeaux's Dordogne river in the Entre-deux-Mers area. This wine is merlot dominant with around 30% cabernet sauvignon filling out the blend. Careful maturation in a mixture of new and used oak has resulted in a classically style Bordeaux red.

Cellar: Drink now or cellar 5 to 7 years.

Chateau Lamothe Vincent Bordeaux

A blend of 80% merlot and remainder a mixture of cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc makes a deliciously full bodied Bordeaux that is quite luscious and very drinkable now! Elegant tannins mean this well balanced wine will age well.

Cellar: Up to 8 years or more.

Chateau du Gazin 2015 Bordeaux

From the ripper 2015 vintage this wine is just now starting to show a few signs that it is softening up.The chateau is located in the Canon Fronsac AOC area and is a blend of merlot, cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon. The palate is very rich and rounded with generous amounts of ripe fruit that denotes the vintage, and is balanced by a nice touch of toasty oak from the barrel.

Cellar: Can cellar from 5 to 10 years.

Chateau Platon Rouge Bordeaux

Chateau Platon is owned by the Dumas-Gauthier family and is situated in the Sainte Radegonde in the heart of the Entre-Deux-Mers. Christelle Gauthier has made this vintage with the help of friend Francois Meynard from Ch La Bouree. This medium bodied wine is blend of merlot and cabernet franc and shows deliciously ripe, fragrant red fruits on the palate with a long harmonious finish with just a hint of cedar.

Cellar: For 5 more years to unlock complexity.

Chateau Lagnet Bordeaux

For almost two centuries the three traditional Bordeaux varieties of merlot, cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon have grown in the Chateau Lagnet vineyard. Planted on gently sloping hillsides and rounded hilltops on a rather dense clay terroir on an underlying layer of fossil rich limestone which is particularly favourable to the development of the merlot grape. The Reserve wine is a blend of 80% merlot and 20% cabernet sauvignon and in the 2016 vintage with ripe merlot dominating the palate the wine is soft and luscious with a nice backbone supported by the cabernet component.

Cellar: Drink now or improve up to 5 years.

Chateau Font-Vidal Bordeaux 750

Claire Poncet and brother Antoine are the third generation to be making the wine at Font Vidal. This wine is an elegant example from the much touted 2015 vintage. A blend of the three typical Bordeaux varieties with merlot being the base. Malbec is also in the blend albeit in a small quantity. The wine is medium bodied with beautifully melded tannins, soft and powerful at the same time.

Cellar: Drink now. Cellaring is possible but not mandatory!

If you're a seasoned wine pro, this selection will round out your cellar. And, if you're only getting started, there are some good options here that you can drink now or cellar for longer periods to start your collection. If you are new to the wine game, read: wine words decoded.
